Electronic article surveillance (EAS) is an electronic method aimed at preventing shoplifting from retail stores. Special tags are fixed to merchandise. These tags are removed or deactivated at the point of sale. At the exits of the store, a detection system sounds an alarm or otherwise alerts the staff when it senses active tags. To be effective the majority of the items in a store need to be fitted with the tags. This poses a number of problems apart from the logistics of tagging all the merchandise. In particular:

If product is to be shipped to a store by a supplier pre-tagged, how can the supplier ensure the merchandise is correctly tagged?

How does the store check that the stock items are correctly tagged?

How can the deactivation of the tag be checked?

During sales it is common practice to remove the tags to speed-up the checkout process. How can racks or piles of merchandise be quickly checked to ensure no tag has been left on sales stock?

If the exit detection system sounds an alarm and store personnel stop a suspected shoplifter. How can the situation be handled with the minimum disruption and without a dispute at the store entrance?
