Electronic article surveillance (EAS) is an electronic method aimed at preventing shoplifting from retail stores.
Special tags are fixed to merchandise. These tags are removed or deactivated at the point of sale.
At the exits of the store, a detection system sounds an alarm or otherwise alerts the staff when it senses active tags.
To be effective the majority of the items in a store need to be fitted with the tags.
This poses a number of problems apart from the logistics of tagging all the merchandise. In particular: |
